The Lake Houston Family YMCA continues to serve the community through youth and adult programs. The Y’s Annual Campaign allows more than 3,000 individuals and families to participate in after school, camp, youth sports, swimming, health and wellness, membership, active older adults special needs and many more programs. 100% of $315,00+ dollars raised in our campaign stays in our community. Everyone is welcome at the Y.
The Lake Houston Extension YMCA began informally in 1978 with a summer day camp for Kingwood Area residents, conducted at the Spring Creek (Cypress Creek) YMCA. By 1979 a Lake Houston Area YMCA Steering Committee had been organized with support through the Conroe YMCA. By early 1980 community based Y
programming already included 360 children participating in youth basketball, 40 of those girls. Y-Indian Guide Tribes included 160 participants, with 7 groups from Kingwood, 4 from Atascocita, and 1 from Humble. By summer, the 1980 Day Camp had moved to River Grove Park in Kingwood, with 379 children participating. A store-front Y office had been established in Kingwood, and a second Y office soon would be established in Atascocita. The new Lake Houston YMCA was on its way.
Planning began early at the Lake Houston YMCA. In 1984 the Board there developed a long range plan for Y development that created the building blocks which would guide the vision for this Y for the next 25 years. As part of this first plan, the first phase of the new Lake Houston Family YMCA was completed near Lake Houston in 1992, then promptly crippled by a devastating flood in 1994. Through the intrepid efforts of community volunteers and staff, the YMCA was re-completed and was further expanded in 2000. Additional expansion is scheduled for 2009.
The Lake Houston YMCA has stayed close to its roots over the years, by its community program outreach initiatives. A special Y-Partners program early-on was its day camp and community program in the Bordersville Community west of Highway 59. In 2006 the Y opened the East Montgomery County YMCA located in the
Community Development Center in Splendora. This Center serves New Caney, Splendora, Roman Forest, Porter, Patton Village, and surrounding areas. By 2007 the EMC Y membership included over 1,600 people.
Today, planning continues to expand YMCA services in Atascocita and growing communities south of the Lake Houston YMCA. The Lake Houston YMCA is working to develop a unique partnership with the Humble Independent School District for a new Humble ISD middle school and South Lake Houston YMCA complex
envisioned for Summerwood. Programming began in the South Lake Houston area in 2012 offering youth sports and health and wellness classes.
