Eleven Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) high school students, their host parents and youth exchange volunteers from Rotary District 5890 (greater Houston area) were celebrated at the RYE Host Family and Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Sunday, April 21 at Humble ISD’s James D. Eggars Instructional Building in Kingwood.
These 11 foreign exchange students are from ten different countries and were here attending Humble ISD high schools for this academic school year while Houston area students were sent to study in their countries.
The students each had an opportunity to share some of their American experiences after dinner and to thank their host families (they stay half their time with two different families) for sharing their homes, family life and introducing them to various experiences in the greater Houston area.
RYE volunteers, including Lake Houston Rotary’s own Susan Brodbeck, were recognized for their hard work in arranging the student exchange and making arrangements for their stay here.

Ten different Houston area Rotary Clubs, including the Lake Houston Rotary Club, provided this international opportunity to eager, ambitious, and inquisitive high school students — both to come to our area to experience American life, or to go abroad to one other countries around the world.
The RYE program offers numerous benefits to its young participants and their hosts and mentors, as well as to our local the communities. This years’ students came from France, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, Poland, Taiwan, Denmark, Thailand, Brazil and Spain. They were able to share their countries’ culture and traditions while they were attending school here which increases our understanding of the rest of the world.
RYE Houston D5890 offers two different youth exchange programs. The most common is the Long-Term exchange (one academic year) to students in the Greater Houston Area. This program gives students the opportunity to spend one year of high school abroad, staying with two host families and immersing themselves in a new culture. The second is a Short-Term exchange experiencing a life-changing summer discovering a new country and developing new friendships.
