The Rotary Club of Lake Houston Area had two steers and five pigs they purchased from Humble FFA students during the Humble ISD Livestock Show and Auction. The club had the livestock processed for a total of 1,520 lbs. of beef and 585 lbs. of pork suitable for public consumption this year. The following non-profits received meat donations from Rotary on April 3rd: Humble Area Assistance Ministries (H.A.A.M), Family Time, Family Promise (shown in photo), Mission North East, and The Village Centers. This stretched Rotary donations to help students and local charities.
Lake Houston Rotary is making an extra effort to stretch donations by helping students and local charities simultaneously. Here’s how:
Every year Rotary attends the Humble Livestock Show & Auction and helps Humble ISD FFA students by purchasing some of their animals. This helps students recoup some of the costs associated with raising their animals.
The club then has the animals processed and packaged for public consumption and donates the meat to local charities. The meat is divided among the charities based on need and freezer capacity.

Rotarians Pam McNair and Kathy Lemman (second from right and far right) deliver meat to Family Time.
After delivery to these charities, any extra meat does not go to waste. The club freezes what’s left and later packs it up in coolers and raffles it off as part of a silent auction held during its annual Cinco de Mayo Golf Tournament (which will be celebrated May 4th this year at Tour 18 Golf Course in Humble.
The public is invited to attend the golf tournament and/or to just stop by and bid on the silent auction items including the meat purchased from the FFA students. If desired, lunch may be purchased by non-golfers for $30 (RSVP required).
Some of the other silent auction items will be posted on the club’s Facebook page before the May 4th tournament. Check back before May 4th.
This arrangement allows Rotary to stretch donations we’ve received to help students and worthy local charities. Lake Houston Rotary welcomes your donations to help us help those in need.
