Outbound Global Grant Scholar, 2018-2019 Rebecca Young Du

Rebecca Du was awarded a Rotary Global Grant Scholarship in the focus area of “Disease Prevention and Treatment” by District 5890. She is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Humble. She is currently a third year medical student at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX and will be taking a leave of absence to pursue a Master’s in Public Policy through Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.

Rebecca graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2015 from Emory University in Atlanta, GA, where she majored in Anthropology and Human Biology and minored in Economics. Both at Emory and in medical school, Rebecca has dedicated her academic and extra-curricular pursuits to understanding social determinants of health. At Emory, she served as a Pipeline Mentor and as the Executive Director of Volunteer Emory, and in medical school, she conducts research concerning the paradigm of health, conflict, and poverty.

During her grant year, Rebecca will be studying public policy at Cambridge University and looks forward in particular to the work placement component of the curriculum. During this time, she will have the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the field of international health policy by working at an organization, such as the World Health Organization. Through her research regarding the impacts of conflict on health and healthcare access in low income countries, Rebecca has seen the need for increased efforts to address the disparity in health between countries with and without conflict. The Master’s in Public Policy will increase Rebecca’s understanding of this issue and equip her with the skillset to address it in her work as a physician and global health researcher.

Rebecca is very excited to become a part of the Rotary community and to uphold Rotary’s principles of service and international cooperation as a Global Grant Scholar. She would humbly like to thank the Rotary Club of Humble and the Rotary Foundation for their support and generosity. Rebecca’s ability to pursue study at Cambridge would not be possible without the incredible members of the Rotary community, and she plans to serve Rotary’s generosity forward as an ambassador for Rotary throughout her time at Cambridge and beyond.
