Maseno Mission Hospital Water Project

Summary

EWB Houston is traveling to Maseno Kenya to implement a surface water gathering project to provide a reliable water supply to the Maseno Mission Hospital. The Hospital, operated under the auspices of the Episcopal Diocese and supported by All Souls Episcopal Church in San Diego, serves the local community with a 75 bed hospital containing mens/womens/maternity/childrens wards, seeing 5000 patients per year. Rotary is funding the construction - funds needed for travel to country.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The Maseno Mission Hospital has historically relied upon rainwater catchment for water, but lack of supplies during the dry season combined with monkey dung washed off the roof dictated another supply be found. EWB Houston initially gathered two spring sources from an adjacent hillside to serve both the hospital and the adjacent community. During an extended dry period, these sources were found to be insufficient, and some line plugging was suspected due to silt in the system.

How will this project solve this problem?

During this trip we will lay pipe another 1.2 km uphill from the existing system and gather two additional water sources (springs) that will provide additional and adequate supply, and convert an intermediate storage tank into a settling tank for removal of suspended solids suspected of partial system clogging.

Potential Long Term Impact

Taps will be installed along the line where houses are located nearby to provide water for the community, and the hospital will have sufficient water supplied to carry out it's life saving mission of providing medical care to 5000 people per year.
