Four Humble ISD high school students representing FFA spoke to Lake Houston Rotarians about the district’s FFA program and the upcoming Livestock Show and Auction on Wednesday, January 18th during the club’s weekly meeting at the Lake Houston Family YMCA.

Humble ISD’s FFA program is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares high school students for leadership roles, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. FFA develops students’ potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which give members the tools to achieve real-world success.

The students explained how the animals they have been raising will be shown and sold during the Livestock Show and Auction. Judges decide which animals will be in the auction but the others are available for purchase from the students as well.

The students recoup the money they have spent on their animals and their feed during the show. Many have sponsors who help with this cost too.

The public is invited to purchase goats, pigs, steers, lambs, chickens and turkeys during the show. Purchasing methods vary depending on the type of animal. The students raise money through the auction, a “freezer sale”, or as a “guaranteed buyer”. And, for those who wish to just help out, they may support a specific student with an “add on” donation.
